Strong Bodies, Calm Minds

5 Benefits of Yoga for Kids

Let’s begin by acknowledging there are many, many more than five benefits for kids to practice and learn about yoga. However, for today and simplicity’s sake, let’s highlight five here and explore why they may matter to you.

(Hint: the list below applies to adults too. Sneaky, aren’t I?)

Our culture is a busy, on-the-go type, and by default our kids lead busy lives. Both mentally and physically capital ‘B’ busy. While children have an innate and lovely knack to live in the present moment, it can easily become clouded by schedules, screens, and struggling to make sense of their surroundings.

It seems all too common for kids to operate from an overstimulated plane.

As parents, are we not continually looking for ways to provide our kiddos something positive? Something with potential to stock their lifetime toolbox with ways to develop confidence, learn healthy coping skills, and discover what ignites their creativity.

Enter Kids Yoga.

Age-appropriate postures, breathwork, and meditation… it’s exciting and SO much fun! Read on for a few of the benefits experienced when introducing children to yoga.

1. Stress management.

Learning how to attend to their inner world yoga helps reduce stress and anxious feelings by learning how to quiet a busy mind with cooling breath-work techniques or slowdown in postures such as child’s pose, cat/cow, and others.

This is an important area for children to learn too that not all stress is bad. That learning something new can cause “stress”, but the importance of perseverance and determination throughout the process.

2. Emotional intelligence & body-awareness.

Storytelling & mindfulness activities provide great ways for kids to learn how to pay attention to themselves. (This then leads to better attention and empathy toward others.)

Characters within story provide framework for identifying experiences and emotions for children to relate to or try and understand. This can be validating and a real confidence booster for kids. For children this may be simply asking them to reflect— “How would that experience feel to you? Or, where do you feel that emotion in your body?”

3. Balance & flexibility

Both are required in mind and body. This looks like confidence, adaptability, and problem-solving in life. Through asanas such as tree pose, mountain pose, or the warrior series children develop strength and sense stability within themselves.

4. Self-expression & confidence

For kids to have permission in a safe and positive environment to move, stretch, stand, and rest if need be is so empowering. By incorporating sound, color, smell, movement, and breath-work kids begin to understand their body and emotions on a fundamental level.

Talking through chakras in an age-appropriate, relatable manner can also help kids tune in to their internal world and know how to care for themselves.

5. Better Sleep

Need I say more? Better sleep equals happy bodies, happy kids, and happy homes. Who doesn’t want that?

Perhaps kid yoga plants a seed of curiosity toward something more, perhaps it’s simply a place for expression and play. For now, let’s keep it simple.

It’s SO much fun.
